The packaging industry needs to think more in terms of cycles and develop appropriate solutions. The EU is setting the pace here with directives and guidelines (Green Deal, Packaging Waste Ordinance, etc.), but major retailers and brands have also committed to this. It can be assumed that the pressure will continue to increase through corresponding bonus/malus systems in the individual countries (e.g. already implemented in the UK). PET is currently the only material for which mechanically recycled material flows exist and which is authorised for food contact.
The use of PET or rPET in injection moulding for packaging is very challenging. Due to the poor flow properties, only very limited thin-walled packaging could be produced until now. With the help of special mould technology, digital simulation techniques and our material and process expertise, we have succeeded in pushing the boundaries of what is feasible and producing a very light, thin-walled cup (95 cm cup, 80 mm high, wall thickness 0.35 mm). The injection moulding technology results in a very high degree of design freedom with uniform wall thicknesses and therefore an optimal combination of stability and quality. The use of IML decoration gives the packaging a very high-quality appearance and at the same time very good recyclability. Here you can choose between easy separability in the recycling process or the use of a monomaterial solution.
