The sealable lid from SPIES (SPIES SL) replaces the previously used aluminium plate or classic sealing foil in combination with an additional lid for resealing. After sealing and initial opening, the SPIES SL can be fixed back onto the cup thanks to a special snap and clamp function, eliminating the need for an additional lid. In the dairy, delicatessen and margarine sectors in particular, the new packaging solution will help to achieve these positive effects and bring about process optimisations on all sides.
The SPIES SL can be sealed thermally and ultrasonically and is therefore airtight in its original state. This feature therefore replaces aluminium plates or sealing foils. After opening for the first time, the lid can be reattached to the cup with a snap and clamp function, replacing the additional lid and the associated process step. The SPIES SL is made of 100% polypropylene monomaterial and can be customised in shape and size to suit the packaging requirements. The lid also offers flexibility in terms of decoration: different variants are possible with in-mould labelling (IML). This 2-in-1 solution combines a tamper-evident closure with the function of resealing in a single component and demonstrates strong performance as a light barrier, which optimally protects the quality and freshness of the packaged food.
The SPIES SL not only offers advantages for manufacturers and processors, but also for society and the environment. The dimensional stability of the lid ensures that the product is completely covered, making it more convenient to use. For consumers, trying to affix a foil to the edge of the cup is a thing of the past. The lid enables easy resealing, offers stability and prevents dry spots on the food. As the lid is made from a single material (polypropylene), there is no need for additional handling to separate different materials and dispose of them separately. This facilitates correct disposal and significantly improves sort capability in recycling plants, as there are no longer residues of aluminium sealing plates on the cup. This innovation is fully in line with the new requirements of the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation).
