Our world, today and tomorrow.

For SPIES protecting the environment and climate, as well as taking social responsibility, are integral parts in the corporate strategy for long and shape the daily work of all employees at SPIES. For years, we have participated in the industry discussion and continuously develop our sustainability vision in permanent exchange with other stakeholders. To pursue this vision consistently and implement it successfully, it requires open cooperation throughout the organization, characterized by efficient structures, a strong network and targeted measures. Competencies which accompanied SPIES for over 60 years. As an owner-managed family business, we think long-term and future-oriented - not in quarters, but in generations.

Our Sustainability Vision

This is what we are working on

Our vision of sustainability is a target picture of our commitment to the areas economy, ecology and social. Only if we set ourselves clear and achievable goals we can manage to create a sustainable future together.

In addition to our comprehensive quality management system, which ensures flawless production and delivery of food packaging, we are striving for further certifications and third-party confirmations in the area of sustainability.

oekonomie_02

The profitability and future viability of the company are essential for all further sustainable efforts as well as for securing jobs on site. That is why we have made it our goal to grow sustainably with respect for planetary boundaries and to promote sustainable innovation.

oekonomie_03

"Design for Sustainability" is the principle of all our product developments to produce items for the circular economy. Following the approach "As little as possible, as much as necessary", our new projects need 5-10% less material than comparable items.

In order to actively combat climate change, we have developed a company-wide climate strategy based on science-based targets. We are also considering making a binding commitment under SBTi. Key areas of action include sourcing electricity from renewable energies and the targeted implementation of reduction measures in Scopes 1 and 2.

oekologie_02

We have been operating an ISO 50001-certified energy management system since 2012. This forms the basis for continuously improving our energy efficiency. On this basis, we have been able to successfully implement numerous measures and achieve annual savings of around one gigawatt hour in the past three years alone. This amount of energy corresponds roughly to the average annual electricity consumption of around 300 households.

oekologie_03

Beyond this, we consistently focus on expanding renewable energy. To this end, we are pursueing a concept for the construction or direct use of regional wind and photovoltaic plants, supplemented by suitable storage technologies. In addition, we reuse waste heat generated in our production processes internally wherever possible, in order to minimize energy losses and use resources efficiently.

We take responsibility for our supply chain and and develop and integrate a standardised process for evaluating our suppliers according to social and environmental criteria. The acceptance of our SPIES Code is a binding prerequisite for partnerships.

Our SPIESers are close to our hearts. For this reason, we are building a SPIES Academy to ensure the continuing education of our employees. Through a fully comprehensive company health management, SPIES offers a program in the area of health and work safety. A company collective agreement ensures fair and future-proof payment, transparency and development perspectives.

We develop a corporate culture that sustainably strengthens our SPIESers. To this end, we analyze the situation, enter into dialog and develop measures. We take a stand on issues such as discrimination and equal rights and promote diversity.

Together for a climate-friendly future

A long-term approach is fundamental to our family business and is embedded in our DNA. This is also reflected in our commitment to actively contributing to environmental protection and taking responsibility for future generations.

In collaboration with our partner ASSMANN Büromöbel GmbH & Co. KG, we have developed an environmental strategy for our joint site in Melle to leverage synergies and to work together on solutions for an environmentally friendly future. This document outlines our corporate environmental strategy and shows how we as a company are working to reduce our emissions, optimise our processes and use our innovative strength to protect the environment in the long term, following a scientific decarbonisation pathway to substantially reduce our emissions. We are also considering a binding commitment and validation in accordance with SBTi, which may require adjustments to the base year and specific targets.
