For SPIES protecting the environment and climate, as well as taking social responsibility, are integral parts in the corporate strategy for long and shape the daily work of all employees at SPIES. For years, we have participated in the industry discussion and continuously develop our sustainability vision in permanent exchange with other stakeholders. To pursue this vision consistently and implement it successfully, it requires open cooperation throughout the organization, characterized by efficient structures, a strong network and targeted measures. Competencies which accompanied SPIES for over 55 years. As an owner-managed family business, we think long-term and future-oriented - not in quarters, but in generations.
This year, SPIES Packaging has been nominated as one of nine companies in Germany in the category ‘Plastics and Rubber Industry’ for the German Sustainability Award 2025. This nomination is a great recognition for the continuous efforts to promote sustainable practices in the industry and offer innovative solutions. It is also a sign that it is possible to combine economic success with ecological responsibility.
Together with Melle's mayor Jutta Dettmann and many other project participants, packaging manufacturer SPIES Packaging and renewable energy specialist JUWI opened a regional flagship project for green energy generation on Tuesday.

In addition to our comprehensive quality management system, which ensures flawless production and delivery of food packaging, we are striving for further certifications and third-party confirmations in the area of sustainability and are working towards EcoVadis Gold certification.
The profitability and future viability of the company are essential for all further sustainable efforts as well as for securing jobs on site. That is why we have made it our goal to grow sustainably with respect for planetary boundaries and to promote sustainable innovation.
"Design for Sustainability" is the principle of all our product developments to produce items for the circular economy. Following the approach "As little as possible, as much as necessary", our new projects need 5-10% less material than comparable items.
To counteract climate change we develop an ongoing climate strategy on the basis of Science Based Targets. An important component of this is the purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources and various reduction measures, which are supplemented by offsetting through certified climate protection projects.
Through various strategic measures within our ISO 50001-certified energy management system, we will save a total of around 25,000,000 kWh by 2025 since our 2015 baseline. That's about as much as 10,000 households consume annually.
To promote renewable energies, we are developing a concept for the construction or direct use of regional wind power or photovoltaic plants. We want to fully utilize or divert our waste heat generated by production so that no energy is lost.
We take responsibility for our supply chain and and develop and integrate a standardised process for evaluating our suppliers according to social and environmental criteria. The acceptance of our SPIES Code is a binding prerequisite for partnerships.
Our SPIESers are close to our hearts. For this reason, we are building a SPIES Academy to ensure the continuing education of our employees. Through a fully comprehensive company health management, SPIES offers a program in the area of health and work safety. A company collective agreement ensures fair and future-proof payment, transparency and development perspectives.
We develop a corporate culture that sustainably strengthens our SPIESers. To this end, we analyze the situation, enter into dialog and develop measures. We take a stand on issues such as discrimination and equal rights and promote diversity.
Transparency about socially and ethically correct processes within the supply chain.
