For SPIES protecting the environment and climate, as well as taking social responsibility, are integral parts in the corporate strategy for long and shape the daily work of all employees at SPIES. For years, we have participated in the industry discussion and continuously develop our sustainability vision in permanent exchange with other stakeholders. To pursue this vision consistently and implement it successfully, it requires open cooperation throughout the organization, characterized by efficient structures, a strong network and targeted measures. Competencies which accompanied SPIES for over 55 years. As an owner-managed family business, we think long-term and future-oriented - not in quarters, but in generations.
Our vision of sustainability is a target picture of our commitment to the areas economy, ecology and social. Only if we set ourselves clear and achievable goals we can manage to create a sustainable future together.
In addition to our comprehensive quality management system, which ensures the efficient production and delivery of food packaging, we are striving for further third-party certifications and confirmations in the area of sustainability by 2025 and are working towards EcoVadis Gold certification.
The profitability and future viability of the company are essential for all further sustainable efforts as well as for securing jobs on site. That is why we have made it our goal to grow sustainably with respect for planetary boundaries and to promote sustainable innovation.
"Design for Sustainability" is the principle of all our product developments to produce items for the circular economy. Following the approach "As little as possible, as much as necessary", our new projects need 5-10% less material than comparable items.
To counteract climate change we develop a climate strategy until 2025 on the basis of Science Based Targets. In 2025 we purchase 100 % electricity by renewable sources and are climate neutral in the scopes 1 and 2. We achieve this through measures of reduction and compensation via certified climate protection projects.
Through various strategic measures within our ISO 50001-certified energy management system, we will save a total of around 25,000,000 kWh by 2025 since our 2015 baseline. That's about as much as 10,000 households consume annually.
To promote renewable energies, we are developing a concept for the construction or direct use of regional wind power or photovoltaic plants. We want to fully utilize or divert our waste heat generated by production so that no energy is lost.
We take responsibility for our supply chain and have integrated a consistent process for evaluating our suppliers according to social and ecological criteria by 2025. The acceptance of our SPIES Code is a binding prerequisite for partnerships.
Our SPIESers are close to our hearts. For this reason, we are building a SPIES Academy by 2025 to ensure the continuing education of our employees. Through a fully comprehensive company health management, SPIES offers a program in the area of health and work safety. A company collective agreement ensures fair and future-proof payment, transparency and development perspectives.
We develop a corporate culture that sustainably strengthens our SPIESers. To this end, we analyze the situation, enter into dialog and develop measures. We take a stand on issues such as discrimination and equal rights and promote diversity.
Our Sustainability Report 2021 was prepared in accordance with the reporting standards of the German Sustainability Code (DNK). It documents the journey of our vision of sustainability which, on one hand describes the Status Quo, and gives a forecast and goals for the future in which sustainability remains the highest priority. Only those who pursue economic, ecological and social goals in equal measures will be able to meet the challenges of tomorrow and secure the future viability of their company.
Our 2019 Sustainability Report illustrates the company's sustainable strategic guidelines, shows which achievements have already been implemented in this context, and describes the steps planned for the future. The report catches up on our first declaration under the German Sustainability Code (DNK). Here, all areas of activity are highlighted and placed in relation to one another. Lastly, it is important to understand sustainability not as a description of a state, but as a holistic process.
